During the winter and autumn months, we all spend a lot of time indoors in unventilated spaces, where conditions are ideal for the spread of viruses. Therefore, one of the preventive measures is hand hygiene and observing coughing and sneezing etiquette.
Coughing and sneezing etiquette and hand hygiene are simple but effective measures that help reduce the spread of viruses:
- When coughing or sneezing, it is necessary to cover your mouth or nose with a handkerchief (preferably disposable) or turn away.
- If you do not have a handkerchief, cough or sneeze into clothing that will not come into contact with your open hand (for example, into the crook of your elbow or your lap) so that it acts as a filter.
- It is not recommended to cover your mouth or nose with your palm.
- Use disposable handkerchiefs for nose blowing, discard them immediately, and wash your hands thoroughly.
- Avoid coughing or sneezing near other people – move to a separate place.
- Do not blow air towards other people.
- If you are healthy and find yourself near a person who is coughing or sneezing, step away from them and briefly hold your breath.
- Wash your hands as often as possible, especially before eating or after touching potentially contaminated objects.
- Avoid touching door handles or railings that may have been touched by other people.
- Try to avoid items that are exchanged (money, tickets), use gloves or pay by card.
- After touching contaminated surfaces, do not touch your face, mouth, or eyes.
- If your hands are contaminated with respiratory secretions, wash them with soap and water.
- If it is not possible to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer.
